# Tool reference

> Every tool the Isomorphic MCP server offers, grouped by what it is for.

You rarely call these by name: ask Claude in plain language and it picks the tool. This page is
for knowing what is possible, and for reading tool calls when something looks wrong. The role
each tool needs is in [Roles and sharing](/permissions).

Every tool takes an optional `brain` argument, so a single request can reach a brain other than
the active one.

## Read and search

| Tool | What it does |
| - | - |
| `search_pages` | Ranked full-text search. A question-shaped query still finds the page that answers part of it, and the response says which terms it used. |
| `read_page` | A page's raw markdown, for Claude to reason over. |
| `view_page` | Opens a page in [the app](/the-app) for you to see, with its web address. |
| `list_pages` | The tree of pages. |
| `browse_brain` | Opens the whole brain in the app, with a summary of its shape. |
| `find_inbound_links` | Every page linking to a page, in both link styles. |
| `view_graph` | The link graph, optionally focused on one page. |
| `view_activity` | Who changed what and when, for the brain or one page, including edits made outside Isomorphic. |
| `validate` | Broken links, plus advisory findings. See [Keeping it in shape](/writing-a-brain#keeping-it-in-shape). |
| `resolve` | Records a decision on a finding so it stops being reported. |
| `whoami` | Who the server thinks you are, in which organization, at which roles. |

Reads come from an index that checks the repository first, so an edit made on github.com, by
another agent, or by a merged pull request is never served stale.

## Write

| Tool | What it does |
| - | - |
| `write_page` | Creates or updates a page. Replace the body, apply exact find-and-replace edits, append, or set frontmatter fields without touching the body. An edit that does not match exactly once aborts the whole call. |
| `move_page` | Moves or renames a page or folder, repointing every link to it in the same commit. |
| `delete_page` | Deletes a page or folder, and reports what still links to it. |
| `edit_page` | Opens a page in the editor, for you to change by hand. |
| `attach_media` | Stores an image or PDF in the brain, from a public URL or an upload, optionally embedded in a page. |
| `read_media` | Returns a stored image so Claude can see it. |
| `sync_records` | Imports keyed records from a spreadsheet or CRM. See [Importing records](/importing-records). |
| `configure_brain` | Tells Isomorphic where content lives in an adopted repository, and which frontmatter keys to index. |

Every write is one atomic commit. When the branch is protected, writes collect in one open pull request instead. A retry of an
identical write within ten minutes, the kind a client sends after a timeout, is answered without
being applied twice.

## Brains

| Tool | What it does |
| - | - |
| `brains` | The brains you can reach. |
| `switch_brain` | Sets the brain later requests use. |
| `create_brain` | Creates a new brain and switches to it. |
| `connect_brain` | Adopts an existing repository of markdown as a brain, or moves a brain to another organization after previewing whose access changes. |
| `disconnect_brain` | Removes a brain from the organization. The repository itself is untouched. |

## Organization

| Tool | What it does |
| - | - |
| `members` | The organization's roster. |
| `invite_member`, `set_member_role`, `remove_member` | Email invitations and org roles. |
| `brain_access`, `share_brain` | Who can open a brain and at what level; grant, change or revoke access, and make a brain private or org-visible. |
| `create_org` | Starts a new organization. |
| `connected_accounts`, `link_identity`, `unlink_identity` | Several email addresses, one person, one set of brains. |
| `analytics` | Whether the organization is using its brains. Counted in the deployment's own database and never sent anywhere. |
| `submit_feedback` | Files a bug or idea on the project's tracker, showing you the exact text first and publishing nothing that identifies you. |

Organization tools appear only on deployments where people sign in. A single-user deployment
does not offer them. Some, such as `analytics` and `submit_feedback`, also depend on how the
server is configured.

## Your brain's own tools

Pages under a `tools/` folder add tools named `tool_<filename>`. See
[Custom tools](/custom-tools).
